Meet Your Tutor

Hi, my name is Alfie Coles, but you can call me Alf!

I am a 21 year old, multi-instrumentalist and teacher who is proficient in the guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, piano and vocals.

Since I was 9 I have been writing, playing and performing music. Starting out on the drums, I then decided to broaden my skill set and began teaching myself the guitar and bass whilst practicing singing. Throughout the years I have been in multiple bands gigging up and down the country in city's such as Sheffield, Leeds and Edinburgh, all performing original music and gaining a large following. Whilst doing this, I also did and still do small pub gigs playing the classics with just my voice and acoustic guitar.

Performing isn't my only speciality however, as I have studied music production at both college and university, allowing me to explore other avenues in the music industry. With this knowledge, I like to write and record my own songs as well as incorporate it into my teaching, as I feel music lessons should be about more than just teaching the instrument but also about understanding how that fits into the modern world. Another topic I studied at university was music therapy which I have found assists me in teaching, providing a certain level of attunement and adaptability that I feel is crucial to guiding any age in their musical journey.

In my teaching experience, I have facilitated countless workshops all based on songwriting, playing instruments, creating soundscapes, radio plays and acting, all to different community groups around Yorkshire. Additionally, I deliver workshops at Barnsley Youth Theatre every Sunday to 8 - 18 year olds, and so teaching the creative arts is something I am very experienced in and feel really passionate about.
